The Saxon kingdom of Mercia lies broken but not beaten, her alliance with King Alfred of Wessex in tatters.

Coelwulf, a fierce and bloody warrior with a distant claim to the kingship, hears whispers that Mercia has been betrayed by her feeble king and placed in the hands of his brutal enemy, the Viking raiders. But Coelwulf fears no man, especially not the Viking raiders sent to hunt him down.
